Racism is one of the worst evils of humanity, and as if that were not enough, it is perpetuated over generations. The fight against this kind of prejudice must be a daily struggle, whether in social relations or internally.

Since 2003, federal law 10,639 has made it obligatory for public and private schools to teach Afro-Brazilian culture. This is a measure that is already having an effect, since the sooner we approach the subject with children and adolescents, the greater will be the success in the fight against racism.

This way, in educational institutions, you may find more fans of respect and appreciation for diversity. With this in mind, we have gathered 7 essential tips for a student to help in the fight against racism. Keep reading!

Hold a critical debate with colleagues

Racism must be a daily agenda for schools and colleges, and must involve both teachers and students. The most important thing is to build an environment of respect for others and for what is most special about them: the differences.

It is up to you, as a student and engaged in the fight against racism, to propose a healthy and critical debate, betting on the evidence of racial discrimination in society, which will make the other think about the attitudes you are taking.

Remember that many racist actions go unnoticed by the majority, such as jokes and pejorative expressions. However, for those on the other side, it may look like a razor that hurts.

The best way to take and develop the critical debate about racism is to question every detail of racial prejudice, whether it involves a clearly racist act or from a law, which aims to criminalize any prejudiced attitude.

Therefore, encourage teachers to work on this issue in the classroom, especially in disciplines that involve ethics and morals.

Take everyday facts to the discussion

Finding subjects will not be a problem, unfortunately! After all, all you have to do is search the internet and you will find a multitude of practical examples to discuss. Taking these everyday facts to the discussion will help to illustrate the importance of everyone’s collaboration.

You can address both cases that ended up in court or had great repercussions, such as that of the journalist Maria Júlia Coutinho or Bruno Gagliasso’s daughter, Titi, as well as more recurring events that are not made public.

In addition, controversial news commentaries can also be used as examples, due to the range of prejudiced and racist cursing that can be found. This often occurs when people fail to maintain a balanced dialogue and leave for racial offenses.

These examples will illustrate to others that racism is sometimes veiled in the real world. But in the virtual world, protected by the computer screen and in the certainty of impunity, people often reveal themselves.

Be mature to deal with situations

Keep in mind that this is a very delicate subject and, therefore, it is necessary to have waist play and maturity to deal with the situations.

Discussing will not solve it. Just put your point of view and arguments, always trying to deconstruct the false idea that there are superior and inferior races.

Do not classify anyone by skin color

Most human beings are proud of their skin color. And there is nothing wrong with this, but this should not be a premise to belittle the other because the color of the skin is different.

The fact is that, normally, some forms of treatment have a racist connotation, and this can embarrass and hit people. Avoiding treatments that refer to color is a way to help combat racism and other forms of prejudice in college.

Stay coherent in the fight against racism

It’s one thing to talk, and another to act – this is a very beaten phrase, but one that makes sense at any time. It’s no good becoming a militant in the fight against racism and continuing with the infamous jokes, which make it seem that the definition of a person’s personality is given by the color of their skin.

Be an agent of change

The best way to become a transforming agent is to start with an internal change. The fight against racism, to be efficient, must be personal. The example is the most productive way to show the world the need for a more harmonious coexistence.

Take advantage of every opportunity to sensitize managers, directors, teachers, classmates and the community in general about the importance of combating racism. Do not wait for an official statement to offer help to people who have not yet understood the misconception of classification by race.

Value all differences

The fight against racism must be one of the fronts in the social and behavioral change that we expect. However, it should not be done only for militancy or political opportunism. Associations, NGOs and even political parties are great sources of collaboration in the search for a more just and equal society. However, we need much more than official actions and campaigns: we need awareness.

Fighting racism without respecting women, people with special needs and colleagues from other states, besides the different descendants, is, at the very least, a counter sense. Therefore, value the diversity of each person.

It does not seem so difficult to respect others. The biggest difficulty is to understand people who insist on judging by their skin color due to a feeling of superiority. Only by receiving the other with open arms – and open mind – is it possible to practice justice.

This thought is very pertinent in the fight against racism. Therefore, deconstruct yourself and show other people, from dialogue, that reflecting on small attitudes that can be pejorative to the other is a fundamental step in this fight. Think about these tips and make a difference in the world!
